What is Rhinoplasty?

A Chicago’s male rhinoplasty surgery or “nose job” is a surgical procedure to address the aesthetics or function of the nose. People commonly pursue a nose job to change the way that their nose looks, for example, to reduce a nasal hump, or to correct nostril asymmetry. Any plastic surgeon can perform a rhinoplasty

Would you want a general contractor doing complicated plumbing or electrical work? Do you really want someone who does pre-dominantly breast augmentations and tummy tucks performing your rhinoplasty? Rhinoplasty is an exceedingly complex and demanding operation. A millimeter or two can make a huge difference in the result. Anesthesia is dangerous

Most rhinoplasty surgery is done under general anesthesia meaning you are completely asleep. It’s exceedingly safe even in sick and elderly patients. Most patients having rhinoplasty surgery are generally healthy, and risks of long term complications are exceptionally rare.

Not all rhinoplasty procedures are the same because not all faces are the same. Also, different patients suffer from different nasal issues that would have to be addressed with a surgical solutions specific to their needs. 

The two most common types of rhinoplasty are “open” and “closed”. However, here we’re going to define all of the surgical procedures that your surgeon might mention during your consultation: 

• Open Rhinoplasty: This is where incisions are made in the think area of skin separating the nostrils (columella).  The skin envelope is gently lifted away to give access to the bone and cartilage beneath. This is the most common approach in rhinoplasty and is used for major reshaping of the structures of the nose.
• Closed Rhinoplasty: This is a “less invasive” procedure that involves separating the skin alone to remove, shape, or rearrange the bones and cartilage for minor nose reshaping.  Although sometimes thought to less invasive, this technique allows for less predictability. 
• Filler Rhinoplasty: Sometimes, a surgeon may recommend the use of injectable fillers. These injectable fillers (Restylane and Juvederm) are long-lasting, but not permanent, and can fill grooves in the nose, smooth out hard angles, and change the angle of the tip of the nose.  This is sometimes termed, “non-surgical rhinoplasty”.
• Secondary or Revision Rhinoplasty: In some cases, a revision rhinoplasty, or secondary rhinoplasty, may be needed. This is usually to correct issues that have arisen after the first surgery or to make minor amendments where requested. Many secondary rhinoplasties are minor surgeries but some are very complex problems and may require an open procedure.

You can choose your approach based on your surgeon’s experience and what kind of procedure you may want and what can best address your needs. During your rhinoplasty recovery, a splint and/or packing may be placed inside your nose and a splint or bandages placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during initial healing.

While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take up to a year for your new nasal contour to fully refine. During this time you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it refines to a more permanent outcome. 

Swelling may come and go and worsen in the morning during the first year following your rhinoplasty surgery.

You will be given specific instructions that may include:

• How to care for the surgical site
• Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection
• Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health
• When to follow up with your plastic surgeon.

Be sure to ask your rhinoplasty surgeon specific questions about what you can expect during your individual recovery period:

• Where will I be taken after my surgery is complete?
• What medication will I be given or prescribed after surgery?
• Will I have dressings/bandages after surgery?
• When will they be removed?
• Are stitches removed? When?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a procedure in cosmetic surgery that aims to give a more youthful appearance to the face.It reshapes the lower half of the face by removing excess facial skin. The procedure consists of removing excess skin and fat, tightening underlying muscles and re-draping the skin of your face and neck.

The procedure can also tighten the underlying tissues, and it may be combined with surgery to enhance the forehead, cheeks, brows, and eyelids.

What happens in facelift?

Facelift surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure. It may involve a local anesthetics and sedatives or general anesthesia.

The procedure can take from 2 to 5 hours, and the person can normally go home on the same day after surgery.

In a traditional facelift, the surgeon makes an incision in front of the ear, extending up into the hair or hairline as well as behind the ear into the hair-bearing scalp.

The surgeon lifts the skin off the deeper facial muscles and fat, gently pulls the skin in an upward and posterior direction, and removes the excess skin. They may tighten the deeper tissues of the face.

A small incision, or cut, may be made under the chin to tighten the skin and deeper tissue of the neck. This is known as a neck lift.

The incisions are then closed with sutures and possibly staples. A drain may be placed under the skin behind the ear for one or two days, to remove any excess blood and fluids. Bandages are applied.

What can you expect after the facelift procedure?

Here’s what to expect after a facelift.

Expect to look worse before you look better. Do not panic; this is normal. There will be swelling and bruising. As swelling and bruising fades, you will begin to see the results.

Keep your head elevated for two to three days to minimize swelling and to speed recovery. Do not underestimate the importance of head elevation. It will reduce your recovery time. Failure to do so may prolong recovery and may create disturbing facial asymmetry.

Following surgery, your entire head will be bandaged. The bandage may feel tight at first because it is meant to apply an even pressure to your face, neck, and head to minimize bruising and swelling. The bandages are usually removed one day after surgery. You may shower and shampoo after the dressings are removed.

Monitor your incisions for signs of infection: spreading redness, swelling, tightness, pus or drainage, excessive pain, increasing warmth. A fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or greater may also indicate an infection.

You may feel some tightness and numbness on your face and neck. This tightness generally resolves within two months. The feeling of tightness is usually due to swelling. As the swelling goes down, your skin will loosen and then stabilize. Do not become alarmed that the facelift didn’t work. It is normal for the face to look less wrinkled initially after surgery due to swelling. Numbness may persist for several months and will gradually improve.
